What is TMJ?
TMJ/TMD
TMJ refers to the temporomandibular joint in the human body. This is also known as the jaw joint. It is located
in front of both ears where the skull (temporo) joins the jaw (mandibular). This joint is used when talking, eating
and swallowing so it is the most frequently used joint in the body. It is also the most complex joint in the body,
being connected to many, many parts of the head and body. Because of this complexity, many people looking for
TMJ Relief may search for years before finding the TMJ Dentist Treatment and solution they are wanting and needing for
their specific type of TMJ Disorder/Syndrome (also known as TMD).
There are many types of TMJ Pain due in part to the number of different bones, ligaments, muscles
and nerves linked to the TMJ area. And, the cartilage disc that lies between the bones of the skull and jaw can
also become damaged. Trauma or damage to any one of these elements may cause pain, or even more damage, either in
the jaw area itself or in additional locations throughout the head and body. This can lead to a great variety of
possible TMJ Symptoms people experience.
For example, one type of injury to a muscle that connects directly to the jaw may create Jaw
Pain while a different type of trauma may cause Lock Jaw. On the other hand, a certain type of
ligament injury may result in Jaw Clicking or Popping while Headaches/Migraines or Neck
Pain may occur due to nerves being effected. These are only a few of the possible symptoms someone may
experience because of a TMJ problem.
Some estimates are that 20% of the population suffers with TMJ disorder. While many men and children are
effected by it, approximately 80% of those who suffer with pain related to TMJ are women.
Many cases of chronic pain are simply misdiagnosed by various health professionals because they are not trained
to recognize the root cause of the pain and/or they do not associate a TMJ dysfunction with many of its symptoms.
On top of this, even if TMJ is suspected to be the cause of pain, it can be difficult to isolate the specific cause
of someone's TMJ disorder.
Difficulty in uncovering the root cause of many cases of chronic pain has lead to recent advancements in
Neuromuscular Dentistry where the diagnosis and treatment of pain related to TMJ focuses on the appropriate
muscles, ligaments, nerves.
